Many events were canceled in the face of the 9/11 tragedy – we continued.
Raising funds, raising dreams, and building inspiration through our art.
It is not what lies behind us or what lies before us – It is what lies within us…

  …Thus We Dance
“Why are we here? For love of course,” stated Board Member Diana de Vegh as she eloquently welcomed treasured friends, patrons and collaborators to our annual Fall benefit. At the Art Director’s Club, November 12, exquisite painted panels by Venezuelan artist Jacobo Borges, the set for Buglisi’s Sand, hung from ceiling to floor along the great wall. Hosted by the charismatic Joel Grey, Joan Jett and Charles Busch, the event featured celebrated NYC chefs Terrance Brennan, Gary Coyle, Scott Ubert and Amy Scherber. Long-time collaborator Debora Maché’s deeply emotional candlelit painting, Red Dimensions, served as a backdrop to Terese Capucilli’s stunning performance of Buglisi’s Speak Memory in tribute to Bill Biggart and the victims of 9/11. Biggart was the sole photojournalist to lose his life in this tragedy.

  Highlights of the evening:
Photographers Nan Melville and Kristin Lodoen, stylist April Barton of Studio 303, mysterious Tarot Card readings, a Silent Auction – which included generously donated items from Peter Max and Annie Leibovitz, with proceeds for a signed Company photo donated to the NY Police and Fire Widows’ Fund – and the beautiful exhibition of Biggart’s images of the Company. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Wendy Doremus Biggart for making this tribute possible and for Bill’s emotional last photo of the Twin Towers, and to Jonathan Soard for providing the reproduction of the prints for the exhibition.

The full Company joyously performed an excerpt from Foreman’s Mean Ole World, with live music by composer Lisa DeSpain and Catfish Corner, who also provided blues for the entire evening.

Diana de Vegh reminded us as well that “our real home, our only safe home, is in the life of the imagination” – Thus We Dance…

The Company thanks the Benefit Committee and all of our Patrons for their invaluable dedication to making this evening a success.
