The World of Dance with Francis Mason
announced by Francis Mason

What a joy to see dancers who know exactly who they are and what they want to be on stage. At the New Victory Theater on 42nd street all this weekend the ensemble called Buglisi/Foreman Dance is putting on a fascinating program that takes us from high solo dramatics to earthiness and the blues. When the curtain goes up and Terese Capucilli rises from the stage to give us the essence of Sarah Bernhardt, one of the great actresses of all time, without speaking a word, we know that she has accepted the ultimate dare: how to show a character in gesture and movement all the world understands. Capucilli succeeds magnificently in this dance created by Jacqulyn Buglisi. She and Christine Dakin all evening exemplify a beauty and strength in dance that we have not seen since the days of Martha Graham herself. Buglisi's new dance called “Sand” takes us back to the soil. Foreman's dance “Mean Ole World” with live music by the Catfish Corner reminds us of the words of Tom Waits:

“If you want money in your pocket and a top hat on your head, a hot meal on your table and a blanket on your bed, well today is gray skies, tomorrow is tears you'll have to wait till yesterday is here.”

And that's the story of the world of dance. This is Francis Mason.
